UN-AMERICAN VOTES STILL COUNT

An interesting debate is bearing down on the Republican presidential primary, whether evangelical Christians will vote for a Mormon. Evangelical Christian and “Christian Leader” Mike Huckabee became infamous when at one debate he raised his hand as a creationist. Mitt Romney is becoming infamous to evangelical Christians because, the polls and pundits say, evangelical Christians will not vote for Mitt because he is a member of a cult.Is Mitt a cultist? Liberty Theological Seminary has a very interesting class (iTunes or http://www.podcastdirectory.com/podcasts/25341) called “Sects and Cults.” During the class, Liberty‘s moderator interviews leaders from varying faiths through a basic explanation of their sects and cults, i.e. their faith. These podcasts are informative, basically respectful and despite requiring the proverbial “suspension of disbelief,” helpful in rounding one’s understanding of another’s perspective of, for constitutional sake, their creed or religion.

So what if an evangelical Christian refuses to vote for a Mormon, because he is a Mormon? In its simplest terms, this would be un-American. It would have been un-American for John F. Kennedy to allow the Vatican to dictate foreign policy. It is similarly un-American for an Armageddonist to direct, in the shadows, American policy as if Armageddon is at hand. It would be similarly un-American for an evangelical Christian to refuse to vote for Mitt Romney because he is a cultist, sectist or, back to constitutional terms, holder of a different creed or religion.

So if one wishes to be un-American, one may refuse to vote for Mitt because he is a Mormon. If one wishes to be American, and vote American, then that person should find another reason to vote for or against Mitt. After all, a vote for Christian Leader Huckabee is a vote against America, against the Constitution and against the First Amendment.
